Open Door Session Retreat: Vision, Mission & Space

The council/session of the Open Door Church met Saturday, February 10th for a special retreat/workshop. A report will be shared with the congregation Sunday, March 10th following worship. This post is a reflection on a couple of the areas we discussed and discerned: the church’s vision and mission; the need for office and worship space.

Vision/Mission: The goal was to discern or make clear the vision of where God is leading Open Door. Mission follows vision: What will the church DO to fulfill the vision? Both vision and mission were clarified. It was somewhat surprising to discover both were already in plain sight. More later on 3/10.

Space: Rental agreements with the Union Project (office space) and The Neighborhood Academy (worship space) were reviewed. A task force will be created to determine if current agreements and space allocations are adequate now and for the future.

All three (vision, mission, space) are about the identity of Open Door and will impact the search for your next Pastor. After 20 years, what has changed about Open Door? Who are you now? Who does God want you too be in… 5 years? 10 years? 20 years? And what skills will your next Pastor need to possess in order to help you fulfill your mission?

Questions, questions, questions. Now it’s time to look for answers.

Vision and Mission: Refraction and Traction

I really dislike going for my annual eye exam. The eyedrops! Aargh. The bright light burning in my skull as my doctor (my neighbor nonetheless) says, “Hold still please.” And the continued dilation as those dang eyedrops slowwwwwwly wear off.

I know, I know. As one who suffers from presbyopia (NOT an aversion to presbyterianism!), I need my vision checked regularly. I will probably have to get new glasses, too. My exam will point out how my vision has changed over the past year. Such is the fate of the person with wonky vision.

Churches need a vision check-up every now and again, and a vision check-up is most needed during the interim/transition time. Why? Pastoral leadership overtly and subtly shapes a congregation’s vision, and when a pastor leaves the church’s vision usually changes.

For any group or institution, vision is what motivates them/it to move into the future. For a church, it is seeing or discerning where God is leading. A congregation’s vision leads to certain ways of being church, vision shapes what a congregations does.

Mission is what a congregation does to fulfill its vision. When vision isn’t clear, mission tends to be disorganized. As the saying puts it, “If you don’t know here you’re going, any road will get you there.” And THAT isn’t good. Scattered mission can wear out a congregation; helter skelter activity can become exhausting “work” versus spiritually uplifting care and concern. You can’t get any traction when there’s no unifying vision.

The Open Door council/session is meeting for a “refraction and traction” retreat. We’ll address: How has Open Door’s vision changed? What ways will this congregation live out its vision? And what competencies must the next pastor possess to help the congregation see and live its vision and mission? Important stuff so keep us in prayer. (The session’s work will be shared with the congregation in future “discernment sessions” yet to be scheduled.)

Spiritual Growth During the Transition

There is an inherent tension in transitional ministry. The interim Pastor and congregation are to reflect on the church’s heritage (history) while at the same time embracing where God is leading (future). Reminds me of the 1967 Moody Blues album title “Days of Future Past.”

How do we examine our past, cherishing what was, while stepping into the unknown of what is to be? Don’t we by nature cling to what we know (or have experienced)? For many, anxiety takes hold when pressed to wrap their minds or hearts around the uncontrollable. As Leonard Cohen said, “This world is full of conflicts and full of things that cannot be reconciled.”

It’s in that tension where growth can occur; there’s a space where the Spirit creeps in and creates opportunities for something new to emerge. The Exodus from enslavement in Egypt created the opportunity for God’s people to become a freed community serving one another not Pharaoh. Rome’s cross (meant to thwart resistance to its power) was a space where love prevailed over evil. The Spirit was at work transforming a people and a tool of execution.

Where is that Spirit now as the Open Door journeys from what was and is to what can be? It’s probably too early to have clarity but the Spirit is at work I’m sure. “The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

May we all be attentive to where and how God’s Spirit is growing in us and around us and through us.

Blest Be the Tie That Binds

It’s been said about the mainline church that we live in a post-denominational era. People don’t attend worship or formally join a church because of its denominational affiliation. Combine this with the oft-heard phrase, “I don’t trust organized/institutional religion” and we have a stew of indifference about “denominational linkages.”

While there’s truth to the expression that “all politics are local”, it’s also true that a church can’t deny it has some denominational connection even if tangentially. The style of worship, the form of governance, the theology of a church has a history of some sort. That history (and linkage to it) may be invisible to most, but the heritage is visible in clergy attire (jeans or robe), who the clergy are (white and male), and what’s heard from the pulpit.

Which brings me to the interim task of “rethinking denominational linkages.”

Most PC(USA) congregations will experience denominational ties through their presbytery’s Committee (or Commission) on Ministry (COM). This group will provide a Liaison to the COM helping the Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) do its work.

The PC(USA) provides a matching service (Church Leadership Connection/CLC) connecting churches seeking a Pastor to Pastors seeking a call.

And foundational to the entire call process is our understanding of Ordered Ministries (Book of Order) that is distinctively Presbyterian.

So, denominational connections are built into the transitional process of getting to the call of a new Pastor. There’s much more that could be said about strengthening connections (worship, sacraments, social policy) but let’s leave that for another post.

Focus Areas of Interim Ministry

Our wisdom, insofar as it ought to be deemed true and solid wisdom, consists almost entirely of two parts: the knowledge of God and of ourselves. But as these are connected by many ties, it is not easy to determine which of the two precedes and gives birth to the other.” (John Calvin)


Intentional interim ministry is, in the grand scheme of Christianity, a recent development. Loren Mead (of the now-defunct Alban Institute) formulated five developmental tasks of the congregation during the in-between times (interim) of a congregation in the 1980’s. These tasks were viewed as being necessary for the congregation’s ability to detach from the departing Pastor and connect with the new Pastor. Congregations, like people individually, change when relationships change, and the five tasks (led by a skilled Interim Pastor) helped a congregation have a healthy letting go and embracing of the future.

In the past few years, a group out of Winston-Salem, NC (Center for Congregational Health, a ministry of Wake Forest Baptist Health’s FaithHealth Division.), has tweaked the five tasks into five “focus areas.” Rather than viewing interim work as a checklist, the focus areas encompass more laterally the way congregations (like individuals) work through transitions–more holistically rather than sequentially. In other words, interim ministry looks at the whole system of people changing, adapting to the transition. I follow the “focus areas” model.

•Heritage: Reviewing how the congregation has been shaped and formed.

•Mission: Defining and redefining sense of purpose and direction.

•Leadership: Reviewing the congregation’s ways of organizing and developing new and effective clergy and lay leadership.

•Connections: Discovering all the relationships and networks a faith community builds beyond itself.

•Future: Synthesizing the interim work, activating and training the pastoral search or call committee, and coaching the committee (as requested) to accomplish its work

I’ll say more about the common work we’ll do over the next few months in future posts. This is a challenging time for the church and also one rife with opportunities.

Traveling by Stages

The time between pastors is a season of transition. The relationships between people and pastor change often coming to an end. Worship takes on a new tenor with the loss of a voice. Vision for the future may become murky after the spiritual leader departs.

The interim time is also a journey. Much like the Israelites who travelled for forty years in the desert and who were formed into a new people as a result of that journey, congregations can find a new identity and new purpose during the time of transition. Also like the Israelites, the congregation in transition is promised an end but still gets anxious by not knowing exactly when the end will come. “How long must we travel in this desert,” God’s people asked (demanded) “When will we get a new pastor?” the congregation asks.

Our journey together will probably last twelves months or so. Apart from the work of a Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC), we have work to do before a new pastor is called. Are there unresolved issues? Is the church’s vision clear? Is the mission (action plan) aligned with the vision? What is the financial health of the church? What needs to be tweaked or altered or completely changed? Addressing issues like these will offer solid ground on which the new pastor can “water the seeds” planted by God.

So, here we go, starting our travels together. Remember the African proverb: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
