OD Shepherd of the Week

Formerly known as “The Point Person,” this role comes alongside the other volunteer roles on a Sunday morning. The Shepherd is a church leader (elder, deacon, lay) who oversees / assumes responsibility for that Sunday. Ideally, the Shepherd has other responsibilities on a Sunday morning – they don’t have to “just” be Shepherd (music or set up or greeting or clean up or preaching, etc.).

The Shepherd is a temporary role, supporting worship in the liminal space between pastors; with the new pastor’s permission, this role will dissolve 6-8 weeks after the new pastor begins. Knowing that there is a Shepherd on duty allows other leaders in the congregation to participate fully in worship rather than always being “on call.” Thank you for serving in this way during this critical time of our church’s story.

Responsibilities Before Sunday:

  • Save/print/pay attention to Nici’s “Volunteers for Sunday” email.

    • If there are holes, please work with team coordinators to fill in the holes.

    • If someone on that list cannot serve that week, they should either find a replacement and/or contact the team coordinator and Shepherd.

  • If there is a guest preacher/pastor from outside the Open Door, they will be given your name and contact info for that Sunday.

Arrival time: dependent on your other roles that morning and who has the key.

  • Ideally, the musicians will unlock the Neighborhood Academy (around 9:30).

  • If you don’t have the key and are not on set up, please arrive by 10:00am.

Sunday Morning Responsibilities:

  • Complete whatever role(s) you signed up for alongside the Shepherd role.

  • Support the readiness of volunteers for the start of the service at 10:30am.

  • Direct volunteers to the volunteer manual binder behind the stage on the center shelf to answer any questions about volunteer roles and responsibilities.

  • If there is a guest preacher/pastor, please greet them and orient them to the space.

  • If there are any “day of” tasks to be assigned, or holes to be filled (e.g. Greeter), find someone present to do that task.

  • If needed, help “shepherd” congregants into the chapel to start worship around 10:35.

  • Count worship attendees (separate numbers of adults and kids) and send Renee a quick email with the numbers for the day (elders@pghopendoor.org

  • Before you leave, ensure that clean up is happening and someone–either the clean up person OR the musician OR you will lock up. Stay as long as you can to support congregants still present, the musicians, and the clean up volunteer.
